Measurement Accuracy and Limitations

The Deep Voice Test produces a real-time fundamental frequency (F0) reading using browser-based FFT analysis with a 4096-sample window and autocorrelation-based detection bounded to the 80–330 Hz deep voice range. This is a genuinely useful diagnostic tool for deep voice measurement, but it has real limitations every user should understand.

Browser-based measurement is not equivalent to professional or clinical voice measurement. Professional voice measurement uses calibrated acoustic equipment, anechoic or acoustically controlled environments, and validated measurement software. The Deep Voice Test operates within the browser’s Web Audio API environment and is subject to microphone frequency response limitations, OS audio processing, and ambient noise interference. Practical accuracy is ±5–10 Hz in the 80–200 Hz range under typical conditions — not the sub-Hz precision achievable with professional equipment.

Consumer microphone low-frequency roll-off is a significant limitation for deep voices. Built-in laptop microphones and most budget USB microphones attenuate signals below approximately 100–150 Hz. For bass voices with a fundamental of 80–100 Hz, this means the captured fundamental is significantly weaker than the harmonics, reducing autocorrelation peak clarity and increasing detection uncertainty. Results for very low voices measured with consumer microphones should be treated as estimates with ±10–15 Hz uncertainty. The Troubleshooting page documents how to mitigate this effect.

Half-period detection errors occur more frequently in the deep voice range. At F0 values below approximately 100 Hz, the autocorrelation algorithm can produce a secondary peak at double the true period, returning a result of 2×F0. The bounded lag search in this tool reduces this risk substantially, but it does not eliminate it entirely. A result that is consistently double what is expected is likely a half-period detection error, not a reflection of the user’s true fundamental.

OS audio processing affects low-frequency capture disproportionately. Automatic gain control (AGC) and noise suppression applied by operating systems are designed to suppress low-frequency ambient noise — which occupies the same frequency range as deep voice fundamentals (80–330 Hz). These processes can attenuate the voice signal at the frequencies that matter most for deep voice measurement. The effect is more pronounced for deep voices than for mid-range or high voices.

Results are specific to the moment and conditions of testing. Speaking F0 varies with vocal effort, hydration, fatigue, time of day, and emotional state. A measurement taken at one moment is not a fixed characteristic of the voice. It is a snapshot under specific conditions.
